Five-letter words

Obama
Deeds
Fluke
Last year, we often heard that Barack Obama winning Virginia was the end of a trend. Republicans had their day of winning elections, but the trends were going Democrats' way. Republicans would have to change their ways.
Now, unless there's a late surge, we may see Obama's win in 2008 as more of a fluke than an unstoppable trend. If Republicans win all three races, it's time to think why. And what it means.
Every campaign will be a battle. No time to coast or relax. It's not population trends but events that turn electoral chances on a dime.
I suspect the future holds more trouble for Democrats. Because you can only elect the first African-American president once. If the 2008 win was mainly built on that, then it's like a fire of newspaper instead of a properly-built Boy Scout fire that keeps burning despite rain or snow.
