Getting an NFL fix

The NFL draft is done, and it's still a few months until the first exhibition game.
Fortunately, someone is filling Youtube with the "This Week in Pro Football" show from the late 60s and early 70s.
I found this one from 1973, which includes a Baltimore Colts victory over New Orleans that I saw from the upper deck of Memorial Stadium with my dad.

Da smart thoughts

DaTech Guy rattles off some interesting quick hits today, like:
Would it be so hard for Samantha Bee et/al to just admit that there is a good living playing to liberals panicked over Trump and she intends to make it?
If the Bill O’Reilly case doesn’t prove that Mike Pence is the smartest man in Washington I don’t know what is.

Words they don't want to read

The New York Times introduced a new columnist Friday - Bret Stephens.
Many disapprove.
What could Stephens write to upset them?
Let me put it another way. Claiming total certainty about the science traduces the spirit of science and creates openings for doubt whenever a climate claim proves wrong. Demanding abrupt and expensive changes in public policy raises fair questions about ideological intentions. Censoriously asserting one’s moral superiority and treating skeptics as imbeciles and deplorables wins few converts.
That will do it.

Dilfer's going to need those dimes

ESPN's universe of sports commentators got much smaller today.
It all comes down to money.
The simple truth of the matter is this -- ESPN spent way too much on sports rights just as its cable and satellite subscriptions began to collapse. On track for $8 billion in programming costs in 2017, ESPN will rack up its 15 millionth lost subscriber since 2011.
Some fan favorites were let go, like former Ravens quarterback Trent Dilfer.
He'll need another place to talk about "Dilfer's Dimes," those well thrown balls during NFL season.

These are the days of our lives

Scott Adams gives his perspective on President Trump reaching the 100 day mark of his administration.
Everyone observing politics seems to agree on two things about a president’s first 100 days in office:
1. 100 days is a meaningless, arbitrary marker for a president’s performance that is likely to be more misleading than useful.
and…
2. Let’s treat it like it is important! Reeeeeeee!

New job for O'Reilly

Althouse commenters have a great idea for Bill O'Reilly's next gig.
Fire Spicer and hire O'Reilly. It would be the most fun ever.

No life of party

Do you support abortion rights?
Great, Democrats have room for you in their party.
Do you question abortion rights?
Forget about it.
Will they learn to regret that decision?
If the Democrats want to weed out every single candidate across the nation who opposes abortion they will be driven further into the wilderness than they are now. Pro-abortion speeches sell really well in the coastal cities where Democrats hold large majorities and raise most of their money, but there’s an awfully large swath of the country in between where that’s not going to win you an election. I get that Perez needs to appease his base during the tumultuous transition they’re currently going through, but if he’s actually interested in doing the job he fought so hard for he needs to start delivering some wins. And you don’t do that by letting the most extreme wing of your party write all of the rules.

Looking forward to the next 2800 days

The Trump presidency reaches 100 days this week.
The media, like Chuck Todd, wonder if Trump has done anything.
Trump voters have been impressed.
Trump’s supporters are unfazed that a new health-care law is not in place (yet), thrilled with the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, weary of the constant accusations of his ties to Russia, supportive of his strike against Syria for using chemical weapons against its people and dismayed that House Republicans and Democrats are unwilling to compromise. To them, the president remains disruptive, unconventional, defiant and willing to change his mind — appealing attributes to his supporters, but not so to the press.

A plan for O'Reilly

Don Surber has some ideas for Bill O'Reilly's next act.
Be as independent as you can be. If you are working for someone, max contributions to a 401-k, IRA, whatever, for that fateful day when either you tell them to shove it, or they shove you out.
I see where O'Reilly got a nice settlement. Good for him. Maybe he can do Sirius. Put up a studio. Get a screen caller, techs, research assistant and work from anywhere in the world.
They can knock us down, but we rise up stronger, better, and happier.

The losing will continue

Don Surber tries to help the Democratic party.
It's doubtful they will listen.
The Democratic Party will never recover from November until they admit they were wrong, and come up with their own plan on how to make America great again.
In short, Democrats will not win again until they grow up.
There is no entitlement to win. The party that offers the best to the most people wins. So far, all Democrats have to offer is girly melodrama about The Resistance and pink knitted hats given a naughty name.

Missed it by that much

Democrats had high hopes in Tuesday's special election in Georgia.
They thought they had a candidate who could get over 50 percent in the crowded field.
They would show the world the anti-Trump tide was on the rise.
Didn't happen.
Their candidate won the most votes, but not 50 percent.
About the same percentage Hillary Clinton got in the district last fall.
So there's a runoff, where Republicans can get together behind the second-place finisher.
There was plenty of talk how a Democratic win would weaken President Trump.
Does he emerge stronger after tweeting about the race in the past few days?

A day for good election news

A book on the Hillary Clinton campaign came out tonight.
Along with Andrew Sullivan's take on the last election.
And so I find myself wondering at odd times of the day and night: Why is Trump in the White House? And then I remember. Hillary Clinton put him there.

God loves life

Happy Easter.
I've been looking through some pictures of my oldest, who will be 20 this summer.
There's many pictures of a happy baby and toddler, enjoying life and learning what's in the world around him.
Swinging on a swing.
Playing on the floor.
Eating food and making a mess.
God's gift to us is bringing new life into the world.
God loves giving us life, and wants us to share in his enjoyment.
Love life.
Because that's what God does.

Be glad she lost

There's a book coming out about Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
It will make you appreciate the outcome.
Her aides took the browbeating — one of several she delivered in person and on the phone that day — in silence. They had a lot of their own thoughts on what went wrong, some of which echoed Hillary’s assessment: her message was off for Michigan, and she had refused to go hard against trade; Mook had pinched pennies and failed to put organizers on the ground; the polling and analytics were a touch too rosy, meaning the campaign didn’t know Bernie was ahead; she had set up an ambiguous decisionmaking structure on the campaign; and she’d focused too heavily on black and brown voters at the expense of competing for the whites who had formed her base in 2008. The list went on and on.
The underlying truth — the one that many didn’t want to admit to themselves — was the person ultimately responsible for these decisions, the one whose name was on the ticket, hadn’t corrected these problems, all of which had been brought to her attention before primary day. She’d stuck with the plan, and it had cost her.

United we stand

Does anybody not have an opinion on United Airlines and the passenger taken off the plane against his will?
How many more days will we be talking about it?
I can't blame it on the media, when I and 98% of the internet-using public seized on this story yesterday. Few wanted the guy being dragged off the plane to be dragged through the mud, but when you make something a story, you get spin-off stories. The latter is kind of an unavoidable consequence of the former.
It does seem to me this new story, while not exactly what I wanted to read about the victim here, is in fact news. (Or at least what passes for "news" in the current clickbait age.)

They'll keep losing until they learn

As long as Democrats blame the Russians for the loss in the last election, will they have a chance in 2020?
Doubtful.
If they keep re-running the Russian angle, they miss where the electorate will be next time around.
President Trump will be keeping his finger on the pulse of the country until then.

The Chicago Cubs have their home opener Monday.
The first home game since winning the World Series.

Doing things Obama wouldn't do

How do you feel about the missiles fired at Syria by President Trump?
President Obama never made you think about the scenario.
He left you thinking why didn't he fire missiles.
Or do something in Syria.
Doing things left undone by Obama.
That's Trump's mission.

Over there plus 100

Legal Insurrection notes the 100th anniversary of the United States entering World War I.
Right before America joined, the Allies began to fall apart. Russia faced a revolution in February 1917 that forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate and saw the rise of the Communists. British and French forces could not fill in the holes left by the fallen soldiers. The Allies needed the Americans. The U.S. government established the Selective Service Act in 1917, which brought in 2.8 million men and 10,000 arrived in Europe every day. So while the Allies replaced their losses, the Germans could not:

Trump goes "Meep meep"

Don Surber sees President Trump escaping yet another attempted media trap.
Once again he said something that was just enough off for the media to jump on it thinking this time -- finally this time -- we have got him trapped. There is no escape.
But there was an escape, and he made it. Just as the Road Runner passes through the tunnel Wile E. Coyote painted on the boulder, so President Trump sails through another media storm.
A month later, there is no doubt anywhere that the Obama administration spied on Citizen Trump.

Rice is cooked

How did news of Donald Trump and Russians get out into the media?
It appears Susan Rice helped push out the narrative.
White House lawyers last month learned that the former national security adviser Susan Rice requested the identities of U.S. persons in raw intelligence reports on dozens of occasions that connect to the Donald Trump transition and campaign, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.
The pattern of Rice's requests was discovered in a National Security Council review of the government's policy on "unmasking" the identities of individuals in the U.S. who are not targets of electronic eavesdropping, but whose communications are collected incidentally. Normally those names are redacted from summaries of monitored conversations and appear in reports as something like "U.S. Person One."

Opening Day wish

MASN manager Buck Showalter has his thoughts on the first game of the season looming Monday.
“I just want the weather to be good, the beer to be cold, the baseball to be good and everybody have a great time and the Orioles win and they want to come back,” Showalter said.

Andrew McCarthy reminds us how Democrats' views changed once the ballots were cast.
What happened here is very simple: Russia was unimportant to Democrats, was avoided by Democrats, until they needed to rationalize a stunning defeat.
