What Allahu Akhbar means

The New York City terrorist said Allahu Akhbar during his attack.
CNN didn't use his exact words.
They must think Allahu Akhbar means "CNN is fake news."

Suck it up and keep driving

Going between Fishersville and Baltimore can mean a trip around the D.C. Beltway.
But I've been avoiding that when I can in recent years.
Especially during rush hour times.
Virginia thinks maybe tolls will help move commuters off the road and into transit.
Good luck with that.

Number nine

This blog hits a milestone tonight - nine years on the internet.
The pace of posting has slowed as life gets busier.
But with Donald Trump as president, life promises to stay interesting for the near future.

Facebook quote of the week

Good Morning everyone, can someone please turn the heat back on. I am not ready for this just yet!

Focus on crime

Powerline highlights the Virginia gubernatorial race in the final two weeks.
Gillespie is targeting voters in these suburbs with aggressive advertising on television. Although Northam is said to have considerably more money on hand than Gillespie, the Republican is running many more ads in the Northern Virginia market, at least on the television shows I watch — sports and a little bit of cable news.
Many of Gillespie’s ads focus on taxation. In addition, though, he is hammering hard on matters of crime and punishment. I discussed in some detail the ad where Gillespie highlights Northam’s deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities — a vote Gillespie says increases the threat of the gang MS-13.

Ignore the Chess Club crew

Kurt Schlichter takes his normal-sized bat to the establishment.
Of course, the chess club came out in fussy force after the speech in response to the pushback against Bush’s cattiness. “Why, you wouldn't be offended unless you were secretly convinced in your heart that you were some kind of racist,” they hissed, because, of course, no one has ever been offended by being falsely accused of something, and never in all of human history has a speaker insulted people without expressly using their name.

Settle down for the good of the country

In a few weeks, it will mark one year since Donald Trump won the presidency.
A whole year is a long time to maintain panic and alarm.
Before Trump even had a chance to prove just how unfit for office he was, liberals and Democrats were already preemptively tossing around the word “impeachment.” The vigor for the Russia investigation is driven, in part, by the hope that clear evidence of criminal activity will emerge, thereby justifying the introduction of articles of impeachment. Yet despite no smoking gun, 40 percent of Americans – and more worryingly 72 percent of Democrats – say they would support impeachment, according to one recent poll.
If unimpeachable evidence does, in fact, emerge, then fine. Since some are realizing how unlikely this is, the conversation is now moving onto the 25th amendment, with mainstream outlets covering it as a serious possibility. It’s almost as if the goal is to find a reason to get rid of Trump, by any means, or amendment, possible. The very eagerness with which some on the left (and the never-Trump right) are raising such drastic measures is, itself, cause for concern.

Proving the point

Is the media too hard on President Trump?
Maureen Dowd asked Jimmy Carter.
The USA Today recap proves the point.
Perhaps Carter is seeking to placate Trump as part of a job interview: The 93-year-old former president said he is willing to undertake a diplomatic mission to North Korea to discuss its nuclear weapons program.

A better list

Legal Insurrection provides a better 25 conservatives to follow on Twitter.
Why was the list needed?
The far left site Salon recently published a list of 25 conservatives who are “actually worth following” on Twitter. If you scroll through their list however, it quickly becomes apparent that it’s a “who’s who” of noted Trump haters on the right.

What Gen. Kelly said

General John Kelly spoke to the press Thursday.
General Kelly stepped forward on behalf of President Trump to address the hysteria fomented by Rep. Fredrica S. Wilson and her impressionable media friends regarding President Trump’s phone call to the Gold Star mom who lost her son in Niger. The substance of the phone call has become the cause celebre this news cycle. General Kelly’s statement should be a cause of another kind. It should be a cause of shame and introspection on the part of the media.
Listen and learn.

Baffled by the Trump bump

Newsbusters shares information on the confusion NBC has over the latest stock market high.
However, after that brief note of credit to the President, co-host Savannah Guthrie skeptically followed up "So often we see what happens in Washington, what happens with politics directly affects the market. So, if the market is strong, does that mean the economy likes President Trump?
Ruhle discounted that possibility, suggesting the market rally was happening in spite of him.
"Well, here’s what’s interesting. People are going, “How come the chaos in Washington is not playing out in the market?” Part of it is because it’s noise. President Trump does say a lot of things that scare us, but he doesn’t necessarily do them. He says things about immigration, about trade, geopolitics, but then his team kind of walks it back. So the market brushes it off unless it actually gets put into play. And it hasn’t so far."

Oh, say can you C.J.

The same day Colin Kaepernick announced plans to fight the NFL - accusing owners of colluding to keep him from getting a job - the 49ers had a rookie show why Kaepernick is still unemployed.
C.J. Beathard threw for 245 yards and a touchdown against the Redskins Sunday.
He took over before halftime and nearly led the 49ers to their first win of the season.
Every year, numerous college quarterback seek to replace current players on NFL squads.
If you don't produce, you don't stay employed.
Kaepernick could have stood for the anthem all year long in 2016, and still be behind Beathard on the depth chart.
And as a rookie, Beathard has more potential.

Muster read blogging

Althouse has husband Mead reading the Hillary Clinton book.
He gives her tips and she goes from there.
That's all she can muster.
I've heard it said that the first maybe 100 pages of the book is a pretty good read, but after that it gets boring. I don't know if that's true, but I have found evidence that the first chunk of the book had a different author (or editor) than the rest of the book. The evidence is the word "muster" which I used to find a section of the text Meade and I were talking about, a section about Hillary's decision to show up for the swearing-in of Donald Trump.
The passage in question ended with
That’s how I ended up right inside the door of the Capitol on January 20, waiting to be announced. It had been such a long journey to get here. Now I just had to take a few more steps. I took Bill’s arm and squeezed it, grateful to have him by my side. I took a deep breath and walked out the door with as big a smile as could muster.
I muster return to find what else they find.

Liking what Trump does

Scott Adams notes how showing President Trump's low popularity - compared with the popularity of his program.
Consumer confidence is peaking while the president’s approval rating is in the cellar. That means people expect him to be effective on the big stuff. But they don’t like him because of the other stuff.

What to do with Weinstein's money

Democrats have a quandary.
They received all this money raised by Harvey Weinstein over the past 25 years or more.
Especially Hillary Clinton.
What should be done with this dirty money?
It's obvious.
Give it to the health insurance companies.
There's nothing in Obamacare that says individuals can't give to them.
But if Congress doesn't authorize, no one else in the government can dispense.
They would help more people than shuffling the money off to other Democrats, right?

Not Fighting, Losing

Still think NFL players should protest during the national anthem?
Does the NFL?
The league wants the players to stand for the anthem, but it also doesn’t want to trample on their rights to free expression, even as it quietly changed its policy to allow for the punishment of anthem protestors, but please be aware it hasn’t actually punished anyone, never mind that the new policy can easily be weaponized to keep some players from demonstrating, but don’t you know the players are not actually required to do anything during the anthem, okay?Confused? You should be. There’s no logic or consistency to what the NFL is doing, which is in keeping with its efforts to make certain issues a league problem while making others a team concern. As always, what matters most is public relations and keeping the owners happy. Expect that to be the guiding principle at next week’s league meeting in New York City, where the issue will be “front and center,” according to NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart.

Pop a top again

Legal Insurrection carries the good news - Chicago has repealed its higher tax on soda.
Cook County commissioners voted 15-2 to repeal the 1-cent per ounce tax on soda, diet soda, sweetened coffees and teas, and sports drinks. The editorial board of the Chicago Tribune called the tax “highway robbery.” The tax added a $1.28 tax for a gallon of zero-calorie iced tea.
Drink up, Chicago.
After December 1.

Sour losers

Sports Illustrated gives space to a snarky retort to NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell's letter to the league.
And I never understood this line of thinking.
And nothing heals divisions like asking those players to set aside their political views and honor a tradition with jingoistic undertones that, in part, was paid for by the Department of Defense and served as marketing for the military.
So the NFL is only patriotic when they get paid?

Goodell asks for running time

When a youth, high school or college football game gets out of hand, the losing coach will sometimes ask for running clock.
No clock stoppage for incomplete passes or running out of bounds.
Get the game over before somebody gets hurt.
The NFL asked for running time in the Anthem battle today.
The league is trying to extricate itself from a bad situation of its own making. But it is a coyote ugly situation of race identification and entitlement, one that has been at least 350 years in the making.
Coyote ugly is when you are trapped with a person so ugly that you want to gnaw off your leg to escape, as legend has coyotes doing when their foot is caught in a trap.
After watching ratings drop and hearing fans boo, a few owners decided to crack down on kneeling instead of rising for the national anthem.

The sports media told us there was unity among athletes two weeks ago.
How's that going?

Wrong Hill to die on

ESPN's Jemele Hill will be taking a two-week vacation after her tweets about NFL protests.
In a statement Monday, the company said Hill "... previously acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down with an impulsive tweet. In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision."
We'll see what happens on the field and in Bristol the next two weeks.

Players upstage anthem by taking knee

I'm learning headline writing skills from Sports Illustrated today.
Did Vice President Mike Pence upstage the game, or did the protest by the 49ers?
The 49ers are the last large group of players continue to protest during the anthem.
Other teams have moved on or modified their protests from two weeks ago.
Did so many 49ers take a knee because Pence was in the building?
Would more have stood without his presence?
A better question to ask than immediately blaming Pence and President Trump.

Have a problem with silencers? I can't hear you

Via Ace, Larry Correia explains why Congress is trying to make it easier to get silencers for gun users.
If you’ve ever been around a really loud bang, you may have noticed that afterwards your ears ring. I’ve got some bad news for you, that ringing means you’ve permanently damaged your hearing. When that fades you will have lost some measure of hearing, and hearing damage is permanent and cumulative. The more of these loud bangs you are exposed to, the greater the damage. It will never get better. It will only continue to get worse.
I was a firearms instructor for about a decade and spent a lot of time running ranges and teaching people. I was religious about wearing my hearing protection, but if you spend enough time on the range you will be caught unaware eventually and somebody is going to touch something off right after you take your muffs off.
People who want it easier to get silencers aren't ignoring your points.
They can't hear you well.
Hang out at the gun range and you'll understand.

Give them credit

The home of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards has a new name this season - Capital One Arena.
The Wizards thought it needed a new nickname.
"The Vault" is it.
They earned what's in their wallet.

Saturday song

This song came to mind during the NFL player protests, and seems appropriate for this week of remembering Tom Petty.

Facebook quote of the week

Time for my annual Rock and Rock Hall of Fame rant... The 2018 nominees are out, and, for the most part, it's a good list, but there are a few that shouldn't make it. First, whom would I like to see IN? Dire Straits, Eurythmics, Rufus w/Chaka Khan, Bon Jovi, J. Geils Band, Cars, MC5, Zombies, Depeche Mode, Moody Blues, Kate Bush, Judas Priest and Nina Simone... KEEP 'EM OUT: LL Cool J, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead.... There are three other acts I've never heard of, so I won't even list those....

Can we talk?

Do you want to have a conversation about guns after Las Vegas?
Kurt Schlichter does.
Sit down and listen to him first.
So, let’s continue our important conversation. How about this? How about we continue to speak freely, saying whatever we want however we want, and you leftists just sit there and be offended? How about we practice our faiths however we want, even if that means some of us don’t end up validating every one of your preferred personal peccadillos (I checked under all of the penumbras and emanations in the Constitution and I can’t find anywhere that you have a right to have us high-five everything you do). And how about we insist that everyone accused of something gets due process and the chance to defend himself – or herself, or even xirself?
Yeah, we know that us having rights is inconvenient, but that’s too damn bad. Because we aren’t asking you for our rights. We’re telling you we aren’t giving them up.
Any questions?

Do players like sportswriters?

As a former sportswriter, I'm amused by the reaction to Cam Newton's press conference answer.
Do players like having to explain everything they do everyday during the season?
Players know that coverage is necessary for their jobs.
But it's not enjoyable.
Sportswriters act as if Newton's comment to the woman writer was the worst thing ever.
Writers need to relax about Newton.
He didn't mean to insult the woman.

Duct tape, what can't it do?

From my former newspaper in South Carolina, a column saluting what binds us together - duct tape.
For nerdy users – repair those broken glasses frames. For those who happen to catch a burglar – duct tape makes excellent handcuffs.
Duct tape is such a key part of holding our society together that a roll is required on every NASA space flight.
So, Miss Williams, my Home Economics teacher of decades ago - even though you are in that great classroom in the sky now, please know your worst student managed to keep it together. With a little luck and a roll of tape.

End run

If your child was born the day Enron declared bankruptcy, you could be driving the roads of Virginia with them.
You can get your learner's permit to drive at age 15 and a half.
Enron went under 15 years and 10 months ago.
Yet, Democrats are trying to pull down Ed Gillespie with Enron.
Got anything more recent?
The latest commercial mentioned companies moving jobs overseas. I guess that means these Democrats will support Donald Trump's reduced tax plan for companies, which intends to bring money and jobs back to the United States.
