Bad Vibrations

There's a bad vibe about vibes over at Ace's.
I've spend more of my life as an agnostic than I have as a Christian and it's no big deal to me when other people don't pray, but there's a substitute expression that a lot of atheist/agnostic people fall back on that I positively despise: Sending good vibes your way.
The way I see it, if you think prayer is some sort of mystical hokum then how is it that you believe in "vibes" instead? What are these vibes? Can you see them? Can they be measured? And how, exactly, does one send them? Is it like ESP? Do you wave your fingers? Is there some sort of sacred incantation developed by the Celtic druids of yore?

Follow the system

Scott Adams still sees Donald Trump moving forward while the media harps on last week's loss on health care reform.
By the way, I told you during the campaign that one of Trump’s signature moves is creating two ways to win and no way to lose. He did that again with healthcare. Here were his two ways to win:
1. Healthcare bill gets passed on the first try. Trump looks like an effective leader. The details of the bill get improved over time.
2. The healthcare bill does NOT pass on the first try. This softens up the far right by branding them villains. Now they have to compromise on the next bill or watch as centrist Democrats enter the conversation. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on Obamacare, and the conditions for compromise are IMPROVING EVERY MINUTE. That’s what the Master Persuader tells us happens when you “walk away from the table” like you mean it. Trump just walked away from the table to go work on tax reform. If you watch his Twitter feed, you know he is winking at the public and telling us to stay tuned on healthcare.

Who did the Russians influence?

When it comes to the Russians and the 2016 presidential election, one question remains.
Who directly changed their vote from Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump based on supposed Russian influences?
You can say Russians attempted to influence the campaign.
You can add Trump advisors who met with Russians.
But how do you jump to votes changing?
Thousands of votes in the key states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania?

Viva, Al Davis

The Raiders are on the move again, this time to Las Vegas.
“I have mixed feelings, obviously,’’ said owner Mark Davis, appearing subdued, minutes after the announcement at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. “I love Oakland. I love the fans in Oakland.” But … “My father always said, ‘The greatness of the Raiders is in its future,’ and the opportunity to build a world-class stadium in the entertainment capital of the world is a significant step toward achieving that greatness.”

He knows the truth

Scott Adams read the article about himself at Bloomberg, and gives multiple examples of the writer's bias showing through.
The writer badgered me on several occasions to make a comparison between Dogbert and Trump. I said Dogbert’s personality is based on my own dark inner thoughts and had nothing to do with Trump except they are both ambitious in the extreme. So she wrote this: “I’d thought the point of those strips was to laugh at Dogbert’s cruelty—not celebrate it. But Adams seemed elated by the triumph of a Dogbertesque president.” WTF?
That’s sixteen intentionally-biased or incorrect components in one story.

It's the pits

Over at Instapundit, Stephen Green is closely following the argument about Wonder Woman and armpit hair.
Yes, some please care about this topic.
And that's very illustrative of what they are still trying to call "feminist" these days. If whether or not a fictional superhero is a feminist if she shaves her armpits apparently has something to do with the quality of a woman's life in the West, then THE ACTUAL QUALITY OF LIFE FOR WOMEN IN THE WEST IS AWESOME.
Of course, it's hysterical that no progressive is complaining that Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman, is gorgeous. After all, isn't her standard of beauty "unattainable by real women"?

Such a good judge

Neil Gorsuch's testimony before the Senate has Powerline impressed.
Gorsuch displayed the same high degree of knowledge, ability to explain the law, humility, respect for the Constitution, and overall judiciousness that we have seen from most recent Supreme Court nominees, especially John Roberts and Samuel Alito. What stood out for me was Gorsuch’s ability to demonstrate his humanity.
Perhaps this comes from having been a trial lawyer who litigated a variety of cases — big and small — for plaintiffs and defendants. I believe, it’s been a good while since we’ve had a Supreme Court nominee with that background.
Gorsuch knows how to talk plainly to people, how to emote, and how to show his humanity. I’m certainly glad I never had to face him in a jury trial.

Who invaded Trump's privacy

President Trump claims former President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower last fall.
I doubt Obama walked into the building with gear, but someone wanted to know what was going on there.
During a presidential campaign.
And the results of that surveillance have been seen for months.
Who did it isn't the primary question.
How come is.
Unless the Trump team did its own wiretapping, someone trying to knock him down did.
Some Trump opponent was involved.
Why did they break laws on privacy?

Nobody cares about Merrick Garland

While the Senate hearings for Neil Gorsuch get going this week, Blue Virginia dwells in the past - claims of Republicans stealing the seat.
The column starts with the usual rants about President Trump, but wants to tar all Republicans with his disgust of Trump.
The Supreme Court battle of last year provides the best way to do that.
But the battle was lost.
Because people didn't care.
If they did care, they would have elected Hillary Clinton to punish Republicans for their treatment of Merrick Garland.
They didn't.
Democrats can keep complaining, but it's all they have now.

He will never learn

Shia Lebeouf has tried three locations to protect President Trump.
He thought the last would be impossible to find.
In only a few days, it was found.
Autists at 8chan's /hwndu/ board immediately began searching for clues to the whereabouts of the flag. Listening to the local fauna, they were able to guess the biome of the flag. By watching the sun go down, they were able to find the orientation of the flag. At night they were able to see stars in the background and used that to find the general location of the flag. After 3am they then sent out a car who honked his horn at strategic locations to pinpoint the flag by playing "Marco Polo" with 8chan over the video stream.

Example of closed mind thinking

AlterNet gives voice to someone who doubts there can be understanding between Trump voters and the coastal elites.
Why?
He doesn't think Trump voters understand their fault in their problems.
The real problem is that rural Americans don't understand the causes of their own situations and fears and they have shown no interest in finding out. They don’t want to know why they feel the way they do or why they are struggling because they don’t want to admit it is in large part because of the choices they’ve made and the horrible things they’ve allowed themselves to believe.
The author offers lots of others to blame.
Rural Christian white Americans have let anti-intellectual, anti-science, bigoted racists like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, the Stepford wives of Fox, and every evangelical preacher on television into their systems because these people tell them what they want to hear and because they sell themselves as being like them. The truth is none of these people give a rat’s ass about rural Christian white Americans except how they can exploit them for attention and money.
The author uses his background to try and show his understanding of rural culture, but it seems more the view of some who reviles that culture.
And sees their flaws instead of their own.

Facebook quote of the week

Still feeling blue

New Republic produces another wine by a progressive still dealing with Trump's win.
They think the blue areas have the money, and should keep it themselves.
But the writer does understand what happened in 2016.
This letter is not intended as one more postmortem on what went wrong: on how the media should have done a better job, or how Hillary Clinton was a bad, bad, terribly bad candidate, the worstest candidate that ever was. Granted, it was Clintonism as a political philosophy, as practiced not only by both Clintons but also by President Obama and many others, that put the final stake in the heart of the Democratic Party as a national entity.

Obligated to pay more

Obamacare fans point to the people they say the law has helped.
What about those the law forced to pay more for worse coverage?
To me, that’s the essence of Obamacare: coerce certain people into paying for more health insurance than they need in order to subsidize health insurance for other people.
My wife’s situation is anomalous. I assume that only a small number of people in America have a primary insurance policy like hers.
But there may be millions of Americans who would like to buy the kind of policy we got for my wife — a lowish cost one with a high deductible that will protect us against the cost of medical catastrophes. (Indeed, it’s one of the principles of normal insurance purchasing to insure only against events you can’t afford the cost of bearing. That’s why I want to buy insurance for my home but not for my television or cell phone).

Making climate scientists feel the heat

Scott Adams has questions for scientists who believe in man-made causes for global warming.
Do they have the answers?
Think of this the next time you go to the beach.
11. When you claim the oceans have risen dramatically, you need to explain why insurance companies are ignoring this risk and why my local beaches look exactly the same to me. Also, when I Google this question, why are half of the top search results debunking the rise? How can I tell who is right? They all sound credible to me.

Defeating the purpose

It's "A Day without a Woman."
I heard about it on my local TV station, with the female journalist reading the story.
More women will be reporting on the event throughout the day.
Women working to tell the impact of women not working.
Would it be better for the movement if all those TV journalists were missing today?

Tapping into their fears

Scott Adams examines how President Trump's use of the idea of wiretapping makes for big entertainment.
This wiretapping situation shows us how much fun it will be. Six months ago, if Trump made a hard-to-believe claim about something that is also hard to verify, the country would assume he was lying, incorrect, or negotiating. Now, if he says something hard-to-believe, such as the recent wiretapping claim, you have to wonder if the President knows something you don’t. Because he knows a lot of somethings you don’t.
If history is our guide, this odd situation, in which the most famous “liar” in the world also has access to the world’s best secrets, will be more entertaining than dangerous. We’re seeing that entertainment now. Trump can make any claim about hard-to-verify situations and we’ll all have to wonder if he knows something we don’t.

Even foodies fuss

Can't President Trump eat what he enjoys?
The Washington Post's food critic criticizes his steak preference.
Food is often referred to as a bridge, a form of communion, a way to connect with people. Trump, a Queens native known to eat pizza with a knife and fork, views food in tinier terms. Unlike his pie-loving, almond-popping, restaurant-savvy predecessor, the current occupant of the White House appears to see food as something to be dispatched without much thought, like tweeting reviews of “Saturday Night Live.”

Understanding Trump's tweets

Powerline tries to understand President Trump's motivation in his early morning tweet storm.
Trump had better be confident either that any wire tap on him was illegal or that the evidence leading to its authorization included nothing damaging to him. One inference from his decision to go on offense is that he has that confidence. But one could also surmise that he sees new trouble ahead and wants to change, as best he can, the focus of the conversation.

Before last Saturday's outdoor NHL game in Pittsburgh, there was a quick shot of some penguins at the stadium.
PETA lost it.
Do they know anything about Pittsburgh and its Penguins?
A spokesperson for the Pittsburgh Zoo said that amimal safety was a top priority and that the penguins had zoo keepers and a veterinarian at the stadium.
“The penguins who attended the Winter Classic are some of the same penguins that participate in our weekend Penguins on Parade event," Pittsburgh Zoo spokesperson Tracy Gray said. "They are very comfortable around people and noises. In addition, it was a great enrichment opportunity for our penguins to be introduced to new sounds, sights, and smells. Keepers and our Senior Veterinarian were with the penguins at all times on the ice.”
How can you deny these penguins an "enrichment opportunity?"

His meeting was different than my meeting

Jeff Sessions met with Russians last summer.
Big deal.
It was his job, as a Senator.
Not his secondary interest helping Donald Trump become president.
Not everything Sessions did last year was in service to Trump.
Republicans can do multiple things.
Maybe Democrats can't understand that.

Seeing the real Trump

Rush Limbaugh tells the reason for Democrats' horror - they saw the real Donald Trump for the first time.
I think one of the things that happened last night — and not just in that chamber, but I think in many parts of the country… I really believe this. I think the Democrats in that chamber may for the first time actually have heard Donald Trump say what he thinks and believes. I think they are so devoted to their media, I don’t think they spent much time actually watching Trump rallies, I don’t think they spent much time listening to what Trump was saying at his rallies, because if they had, there would not be this degree of anger and shock and disbelief.
But we know how cocooned these people are. We know how removed they are. They live in their own bubble, and they live in a bubble that has very thick boundaries to protect them from anything they disagree with. They don’t expose themselves to things they don’t agree with; they just characterize it based on their own bigotry and their own prejudice. And as the Democrats were shown on TV last night in these sporadic moments when the camera cut to ’em, yes, I noticed them sitting on their hands, and I noticed them looking really childish.

They've been Trumped

Roger L. Simon sees no hope for the current Democratic party.
Every time Trump called for bipartisanship for the good of our country, they winced.  They couldn't stand it and didn't know how to react because they are the least bipartisan people in the world and they scarcely know what cooperating is.  Working together is not in their natures.  Yes, they talk about it endlessly but they never do it.
