Whig out

I saw an interesting bit on Facebook today, saying the Republicans could be headed for a breakup like the Whigs in 1850.
Except, I reminded him, that Republicans won 14 of 18 presidential elections from 1860 to 1932.
And the Civil War.
Which got me looking into the Whig Party.
It wasn't strong enough against slavery, so northern Whigs shifted to the new Republican party.
Southern Whigs were stranded - against Democrats but not fiercely against slavery.
So from the ashes of the Whig Party, a party emerged that ended slavery and dominated politics for several generations.
Not a bad goal going forward.
