Debate over debates

The June primary is quite a way off, but the Fifth District Republicans have scheduled two debates for the next month.
Isn't it kind of early for that stuff?
The Democratic side is having a field day watching the action, as state Senator Robert Hurt has declined the invitation since he'll be in Richmond for General Assembly.
Since Hurt is the "establishment" candidate, perhaps we can view these two debates as a mini-playoff. Of the six, one or two would be able to emerge as the stronger challengers to Hurt. Then after the Assembly session is over, we'll have a good battle for the bid.
Whoever wins the Republican nomination is going to be the next member of Congress from the district. It's just a question of the margin over Perriello.
The fact so many people have jumped into the race is a great sign for Republicans. Democrats mock it at their own peril.
