Muskrat love

Getting ready to watch the ball drop in New York City?
You could be watching a stuffed muskrat in Maryland.

Happy Newt Year

Whether you back Gingrich or Romney, Perry or Santorum, here's to a great 2012 - setting the stage for a fantastic 2013 and beyond.

Facebook quote of the week

I love my job, but has been one of those stressful weeks ~ can someone tell me how to get to Sesame Street?

Saturday song

Entering 2012, here's a Republican theme - Nothing's gonna stop us now.

Ace, that's cold

Ace raises an evil Specter against Rick Santorum.

Sign, sign everywhere a sign

Via Instapundit, a report on the ground from New Hampshire.
If you can see the ground for all the signs for Republican candidates.
I like the last sentence.
Barack Obama is in big trouble.

Best of the year - Smitty's back

2011 brought forth the "World's Youngest Blogger." Proud papa Smitty posted pictures from his deployment in Afghanistan, and upon his return to the States.
A few weeks ago, a link to my blog post magically appeared on a post at The Other McCain.
Good to see Smitty enjoying American bandwidth.

Weekend watchdog

For the second straight year, the NHL brings its Winter Classic to Pennsylvania.
We'll see if it will be chilly enough in Philly.
The Flyers host the Rangers Monday at 1 p.m. on NBC in the fifth Winter Classic. The fourth Classic, last year in Pittsburgh, had to be moved to the evening due to rain.
Previous Classics in Buffalo, Chicago and Boston provided enough cold and thrills to make the contest a highlight of the schedule.
The festivities include an Alumni Game Saturday at 1 p.m. on Versus.
There's other ice hockey this weekend. Comcast has a pair of Capitals' games this weekend, Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Buffalo and Columbus Saturday at 7 p.m.
Versus shows college ice hockey between Boston University and Notre Dame Saturday at 7 p.m.
New Year's Day is supposed to mean college football bowls games. But not when it's on a Sunday. College defer to the NFL, which closes out its regular season Jan. 1 and everybody plays.
NBC has the NFC East showdown between the Cowboys and Giants in primetime.
The Redskins close out their season in Philadelphia at 1 p.m. on FOX, and the Falcons host the Buccaneers at 4:15 p.m. CBS in Washington shows the Jets at Dolphins at 1 p.m. and the Ravens' attempt to clinch the AFC North in Cincinnati at 4:15 p.m.
The bowl season continues Friday with four games, starting at noon with the Armed Forces Bowl between BYU and Tulsa. ESPN goes to the Pinstripe Bowl at 3:20 p.m. for Rutgers-Iowa State, then it's the Music City Bowl matching Mississippi State and Wake Forest. The night closes with the Insight Bowl at 10 p.m., as Iowa faces Oklahoma.
Virginia's game against Auburn in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (7:30 p.m.) caps a busy Saturday on ESPN. The day begins with Texas A&M vs. Northwestern from Texas, followed by Illinois vs. 6-7 UCLA in the Fight Hunger Bowl. CBS has the Sun Bowl between Georgia Tech and Utah at 2:30 p.m., and ABC has the Liberty Bowl at 3:30 p.m. between Cincinnati and Vanderbilt.
Six games on January 2 start at noon on ESPNU, with Penn State against Houston in the Ticket City Bowl. At 1 p.m., ABC shows the Outback Bowl between Michigan State and Georgia, while ESPN has Nebraska vs. South Carolina from the Capital One Bowl. ESPN2 carries the Gator Bowl matching Ohio State and Florida. Wisconsin takes on Oregon in the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m. on ESPN, then it's the Fiesta Bowl between Stanford and Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m.
The Wizards head to Milwaukee Friday at 8:30 p.m. on Comcast-plus. Monday, they play the Celtics at 7:30 p.m.
In college basketball Friday, Duke faces Western Michigan at 7 p.m., then it's a Big East contest between Seton Hall and West Virginia.
Saturday, ESPN2 goes from noon to midnight with hoops. Virginia Tech kicks it off at Oklahoma State, then Providence plays Georgetown. It's off to the Big Ten at 4 p.m. as Illinois takes on Purdue before Ohio State faces Indiana. Gonzaga meets Xavier at 8 p.m. before the West Coast finale between Oregon and Washington.
CBS starts Saturday with Louisville facing Kentucky at noon.
MASN has a Big East contest between St. John's and Connecticut Saturday at noon, then has the Big South game matching UNC-Asheville and Winthrop.
There's more Big East on Sunday, with Rutgers at South Florida at noon. The finish of Syracuse-DePaul airs at 5:30 p.m., then Pittsburgh plays Cincinnati at 7 p.m.

Ring in the new year

Lauren Alaina had a pretty good 2011, making the American Idol finale.
She gets to close the year on FOX's New Year's Eve programming.

Because of you, Ron Paul

When I saw the Kelly Clarkson stated her preference for Ron Paul, I knew I had to find a video to illustrate the story.
The choice was obvious when I saw she had to defend her decision.

End of an era

Frank Quayle has announced he's ending his 29-year run on Virginia football broadcasts.
My free-lance writing career including doing a profile on him for the Cavalier program early in the 1998 season.
It was a very enjoyable interview, and I enjoyed hearing him on game broadcasts.

Best of the year - Instalanche

Two weeks before I appeared on Da Tech Guy's radio show, Instapundit was the featured guest. And he featured links to promote the show - which was in its first three months.
It reminded me of the old Tonight show, when Johnny Carson would bring promising comedians on toward the end of the show. If they did a good set, Johnny would invite them to the couch for a minute.
For many, it helped take their careers on the next level.
That idea became my fourth Instalanche of my career.

Can I write in Zeeba?

Only two candidates.
No write-ins.
Virginia's primary won't be any fun.
Can't even show my support for Instapundit's candidate.
It's EBO time (Everybody's Better than Obama).

Bolling vs. Cuccinelli, part one

The failure of Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to get on the Virginia primary ballot has devolved into a proxy battle - the establishment vs. outsiders.
Outsiders for not getting enough voters on their petitions.
Or outside because a stricter rule went into effect a few months ago.
Outsider with friends, since a two-candidate primary is just silly.
Maybe Gingrich's and Perry's failure to reach the petition requirements says more bad things about us than them. When the Tea Party has fired up the electorate, how come more candidates made the ballots in the past?
Republicans are excited about ending Obama's presidency. But not excited enough to sign petitions?
If your candidate made the cut, it's easy to knock his foes.
When you can't vote for your candidate in March, it's a knock against you.
It's not good to aim at Gingrich and Perry, and instead slam potential voters.
The proxy war may be the first skirmish of the 2013 battle for the governorship.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling supports Romney, who made the ballot.
Ken Cuccinelli stands back, questioning the process. Which he has experience with, and plans to do again. And again and again.
It's great to follow the rules. But when that leaves just two choices, it's time to admit the law has failed us. Not just go along.

Voting with their feet

What are the chances Democrats maintain control of the Senate after 2012?
Ask Ben Nelson before he hits the exit.
What are the chances Democrats return to control in the House?
Barney Frank and friends are heading for the door.
Election Day in November is looking more and more fun for Republicans.

Best of the year - DaTech Guy radio

Since I began reading his blog during the Scott Brown campaign, I've enjoyed visiting DaTech Guy's site. When he started his radio show, I sent an email suggesting he talk about his 2010 journey - from a guy with a fedora to the blogosphere's guy with a fedora.
He sent a return email asking if I'd like to appear on his show.
I appeared on the Jan. 29 show, along with two Massachusetts bloggers, and we talked politics for the hour.
DaTech Guy moved to a two-hour show the next week, and continues to provide a platform for bloggers from across the country to talk about the issues of the day.

Romney - I really hate Massachusetts

Ace asks how Mitt Romney will square the circle - how is Romneycare good but Obamacare bad?
One question I asked during the podcast, which I Twittered to Jen Rubin, is what argument shall we who campaigned hard against ObamaCare and specifically against its most politically and constitutionally infirm strut -- the individual mandate -- take into the general election, should Romney be our candidate? What argument do we make that indicts Obama and yet spares Romney?
Much opposition with Obama starts with the health care reform - the bullying through Congress, bending rules to get it passed and basically lying about the numbers to make the cost work.
Obamacare is like a computer virus - destroying what's good about American health care and not coming close to delivering its promises.
What argument can work against Obamacare without taking Romney down with it?
If only the right person - Romney - were running everything?
If Romney said his health care was payback for Massachusetts electing Ted Kennedy so many times, he might make some headway.

Obama - Europe a creek

Blue Virginia has his predictions for 2012, and it's downhill from number one.
1. The U.S. economy continues to recover, in part as Europe avoids meltdown. The unemployment rate drops below 8% by election day 2012. Obama's reelection depends on Europe getting its' act together? Starting packing, Democrats, and Republicans can already start planning for inaugural parties.
As long as Europe's future remains shaky, unemployment will be high. Business will be cautious in investing, due to the uncertainty of government's slowing down the spending.
If the United States can't slow government spending, Europe can't. And when the wallet's empty, it's empty.
And that kind of world economy will highlight Romney's strength.
For my prediction, Obama loses Virginia and wins just 10 states in November.

Operation Chaos 2012

In the 2008 Democratic primaries, Rush Limbaugh encouraged his listeners to vote for Hillary Clinton and extend the process.
In 2012, it looks like Ron Paul will be the beneficiary of the Democrats' chance to bring chaos to Republicans.
Paulistas, look who's joining your quest.

Unteachable moment

Instapundit links an interesting article about the trouble teaching college students these days.
“Increasingly, undergraduates are not prepared adequately in any academic area but often arrive with strong convictions about their abilities."
Sounds like President Obama has had an impact on the college-age population.

Back to the grind

A final day off for me, but the day after Christmas means a return to the campaign trail.
The Other McCain will be working, heading off to Iowa.
Rick Santorum will be seeing if his hard work in Iowa pays off.

Obama's Christmas Eve address

A link to President Reagan's 1981 Christmas address to the nation got me thinking.
What's President Obama's address this Christmas. Norton provides the illustration.

Cherish them while you have them

The News Leader tells the story of a family in my neighborhood - who lost their wife/mom to cancer this summer.
It's a reminder to enjoy your Christmas, and enjoy the time you have with your family. The Argenbrights can look back at last year's Christmas scavenger hunt this year, without Shelly.
"I'm glad I got that on video," Doug said. "I think she knew why I was videotaping it. It was a part of me that thought, 'You know, this might be the last Christmas I have with her.'"

Christmas tradition

DaTech Guy brings it back to basics.
Merry Christmas.

Cowboys move to prime time

NBC and the Cowboys began the season with a Sunday Night game at the new Meadowlands.
They end at the same place and time, with the NFC East on the line.
Can the Ravens win the AFC North? We'll find out next Sunday at 4:15 p.m. - at the same time the Broncos will be trying to win the AFC West.

Have a Merry Redneck Christmas

Every snowman should have a camouflage hat.
Brad Paisley agrees.

Only Romney and Paul? How'd that happen?

The Virginia Republican primary will feature just two choices - Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.
The Professional vs. the Fanatic.
Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich brought enough signatures, but not enough good signatures.
How does this happen?
Who's running these campaigns to allow this to happen?
I didn't sign anybody's petition.
No one asked.
No one made a big deal until the final days - when it's obviously too late.
I didn't read about this on any site I check, until it was too late.
I remember our local candidates getting signatures to get on the ballot in the summer. But Christmas season isn't the best time to collect signatures.
Unless you have a big professional staff, or an army of true believers.
I was going to be excited as presidential primary time approached. Guess not now.

Facebook quote of the week

·    Family is together, the first time since 8/2010.

Saturday song

A bittersweet Christmas song, with the help of lego characters.

Where's Perry?

Apparently, not on Virginia's primary ballot.
Romney vs. Paul isn't going to be very exciting on March 6.

More geniuses?

Blue Virginia tries to put the best possible face on the EPA's new Mercury rules - all of our IQs will increase with less mercury pollution.
If that's the only variable, you can say we have more geniuses.
But look at all the other factors.
How much will it cost to reduce the current levels to this new "creating geniuses" level?
The $10 billion a year to meet the standards has to come from somewhere. Could help education children.
Or jobs will be lost with the money moving to meet this standard. Thus people will not have the children they could have had with jobs. That's taking potential geniuses away from the future.
If mercury exposure is bad, why does the EPA mandate you bring it into your homes with CFL bulbs?
If a certain percentage of the population is destined to become a genius (the underlying thought praising the new standard), then how many geniuses have we lost to abortion?
We need to enforce abortion restrictions right now, to create the needed geniuses for the future.
Someone aborted 35 years ago might be the genius we've been looking for to create green energy that really works.
We'll never know.

McDonald's tax cut

Democrats have latched onto the payroll tax rollback with a round number - $1000 a month for some taxpayers.
That boils down to $40 over a two-week paycheck if you make $50,000 a year.
So if you make $25,000 a year, it's $20 a paycheck.
$10 a week.
Enjoy that extra trip to McDonald's.
Remember when Democrats disparged job growth during Reagan's tenure? Claiming it was just burger flipping jobs?
Obama's best effort is the McDonald's tax cut. Enough to visit McDonald's for dinner once a week.
Wow. Thanks, Mr. Obama.
I will take fries with that.

I want a good gotcha

What's going to be the worst part of campaign 2012 in Virginia?
Democrats trying to find a video clip to trip up George Allen.
At events, they'll have trackers.

They'll try to take videos and make Allen look bad.
Obviously, Allen hates dealing with the public. Technical difficulties couldn't explain his attitude.
It's going to be a battle. It would be nice if issues made an appearance.

O Christmas tree, which landfill will you go to?

It's still a few days until Christmas Day. Times to look forward to that pretty Christmas tree in your house.
But poor Christmas trees in Albemarle County, your fate is already in the news.
NBC29 ran the press release from the county Wednesday, telling where you can recycle your Christmas trees.
Starting Monday, Dec. 26.
For some people, Wednesday is the last day of work before Christmas. So the word must go forth.
Enjoy your time as the star, Christmas tree.
The landfill looms.

Torching knowledge

Mark Steyn sees bad signs in Egypt. When will others realize he's right?
If you’re going to turn your country into a squat of theocratic totalitarianism, a stupid population is indispensable. Washington’s most basic problem in Afghanistan, for example, is that most of its upcountry villagers are too ill educated even to be aware of the existence of countries such as the United States. When, after 9/11, a bunch of guys in the full Robocop showed up and started blowing stuff up, your average rural Pushtun simply had no more idea who they were or where they came from than the Americans vis a vis the space aliens in Independence Day.

Not so fast my friend

Tuesday was supposed to be day four of President Obama's Christmas vacation in Hawaii.
Instead, he's stuck in Washington.
Telling the Republicans in the House to go along with the Senate and give a two-month extension to the payroll tax rollback.
Republicans are saving money by keeping Obama at the White House instead of on the golf course, right?

Expectations for Virginia Democrats - you're going to lose

Blue Virginia has been thinking about 2013 lately.
Poor Democrats. Being on the losing side isn't much fun. Pining for the glory days of the past won't bring help for the future.
On the Republican side, it looks like there will be a barnburner between Ken Cuccinelli and Bill Bolling. Cuccinelli's decision to run for governor has brought forth candidates looking to move up into his job.
Gains in seats in both the House of Delegates and Senate continue to give Republicans power and a larger pool of candidates for higher office in the future.
The best hope for Democrats? A Republican slipup or overreach.
What are the chances of that?
If Cuccinelli's first two years haven't changed minds of voters, then not much will.
Sorry, guys.
Democrats better get used to slim pickings come election time. Their power base in Northern Virginia, and it will diminish as Washington's money power dims in future years. When there's less money to spread around, there's less power for those politicians.
The Republican wave has been building in Virginia for years, and thus the future is brighter.
How long will it take Democrats to realize they are doomed?

Obama's thoughts on North Korea

Is this what President Obama is thinking today?
"Hawaii is much closer to North Korea than Washington. I ought to go there to be closer to what's going on."

Fix bayonets

Smitty and Paco both note the irony of Fairfax County wanting to keep more of what they earn.
Here in the Shenandoah Valley, we keep our distance from you. But keep sending the money, since it came from elsewhere in the country anyway.

North Korea - what's next?

DaTech Guy offers his thoughts on the future of North Korea - and how China may use the developments.

So ya want change?

Instapundit zeroes in on a major flaw of Newt Gingrich's - being too much like Obama.
Gingrich is very good at tossing a stinkbomb over the transom, and letting the ensuing reaction demonstrate that there’s something rotten about the status quo. It’s not so clear that this talent is desirable in a President, however. And, even if it is, it’s even less clear that it’s conducive to being elected President. What’s more, I’d say that Gingrich, if elected President, will share one of Barack Obama’s flaws: The tendency to say things that might be interesting if said by a professor, but that have a lot more impact than is desirable when said by a President.

Keep that blizzard away from us

Checking Drudge Report, there's story about a blizzard coming to parts of the U.S. this week.
Just stay away from Fishersville.
Some weeks are good for blizzards, but not Christmas week.

Undefeated team watch

The Packers made it to 13-0. But not 14-0.
The Chiefs pulled off the surprising upset - no undefeated teams in 2011.
It's the Packers' first loss in 364 days.
The 1972 Dolphins will celebrate tonight.
On the other side, the Colts won their first game.
The 2008 Detroit Lions won't be getting any company among the 0-16 ranks.

Tebowing all over

ESPN's pregame show goes three hours. Seems like at least two hours of Tim Tebow stuff.
Including pictures from Tebowing.com.

Must have been the Froot Loops

The college bowl season began Saturday with a pair of exciting finishes.
Ohio won its bowl game with a touchdown by quarterback Tyler Tettleton in the final minute.
Tettleton's dad, Mickey, played for the Baltimore Orioles during the "Why Not?" season of 1989. Froot Loops supposedly helped him make the All-Star team that year.
Did he pass that on to his son?

Fossil fuel abstinence

The deal in Congress gives President Obama 60 days to make a decision on the XL pipeline.
He can't vote present.
Why has the economy struggled during Obama's tenure?
The price of oil has risen.
The XL pipeline and more exploration would help the economy, providing jobs and turning something from the ground into a valuable, usable commodity.
But Obama and his crew continue to preach fossil fuel abstinence.
Fossil fuels are important, but we need to end our addiction to them they say.
What's going to fill our cars and power plants with this fossil fuel abstinence?
If people are going to use energy anyway, you might as well teach them safe energy use instead of abstinence.

What are the odds

Handicapper Don Surber gives his odds on who's going to win in November.

POTY - Potty person

Reading Jeffords' post on Time's Person of the Year, it hit me why the protester won.
Jeffords uses the shortcut term POTY.
Protester thinks a police car is a POTTY.

Dog gone good post

There's been plenty of Republican presidential debates in 2011.
But few pundits like the one featured at Virginia Right.
And she has the pundit look.

Democrats for vote suppression

Virginia has been a little quiet on the political front the past two years, but the next two sure look they'll be fun.
In January, 20 Republicans and 20 Democrats will gather to start the session. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling can break the tie, giving Republicans control.
In the U.S. Senate, the vice president can break ties. Doesn't the same hold in Virginia?
The Democrats didn't want Bolling to vote.
They lost today.
Will they continue to try and suppress Bolling's vote?

Gee thanks, dad

When the world's youngest blogger is old enough to search for his pictures on the internet, Smitty's going to have some explaining to do.

Weekend watchdog

PPP - purely partisan pile of ---

Blue Virginia touts a poll showing Tim Kaine with a five-point lead over George Allen.
Let's go to the crosstabs.
Democrats 36%, Republicans 33%
What are the party breakdown of the final poll before the 2009 election?
Democrats 35%, Republicans 35%
And that poll underperformed the actual vote total.
Gee, Tim Kaine leads in a poll with more Democrats than Republicans. Who could have seen that coming?
Give me a better poll and I'll believe Democrats have a small chance in 2012.

Bringing back a post from the 2008 Carnival of Christmas.
The pastor of a church I attended in South Carolina liked this song, "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He especially like how it went from down to triumphant in the final three stanzas.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men

I thought how, as the day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men

And in despair I bowed by head
"There is no peace on earth," I said
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men"

Yet pealed the bells more loud and deep
"God is not dead nor doth he sleep;
For wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men"

Then ringing, singing on its way,
The World revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men

Get me some more voters

Public Policy Polling looks at the Virginia political scene.
By polling only 350 possible Republican primary voters.
And only 33 percent of the sample considers themselves members of the Tea Party.
Thanks for the first look. We'll see how it stands up to reality as the season continues.

Even more Christmas spirit

Taylor Swift in a Santa hat.
'Nuff said.

Today's Tied with me

In Technorati, this blog is tied with Texas GOP vote.
They offer a nice rundown of the Occupy troubles in the latest post.

In the Right Wing News

Right Wing News has its latest list of top 40 conservative blogs up.
American Glob comes in at 32nd this quarter.
Back in January, we both appeared on DaTech Guy radio show - Aleister in the studio and me over the phone.
Good job.

Climategate carol

Got your Christmas lights up? ABC Family had Christmas Vacation on Monday, and Clark Griswold wanted lights.
Getting into the spirit of the season, here's my song parody of "Winter Wonderland."

Al Gore speaks, no one's listening
In the lane, lights are glistening
Oh what a sight
With houses really bright
Seeing all the Christmas lights are on

Gone away is good science
Here to stay, blind allegiance
We're singing our song
Yet lights come on
Look how all the Christmas lights are on

On computers we can cook some data
then pretend that it is warmer now
They'll ask: Are you sure?
We'll say: You know, man
And here's the hockey stick
that we have found

Later on, we'll conspire,
With warnings, that are dire
Make the people afraid
We'll pass cap and trade
No more seeing Christmas lights turned on

On computers we can cook some data
And say skeptics are just circus clowns
We'll have lots of fun with our bad data
Until our own emails knock us down.

When we speak, ain't it thrilling
People's hearts, they are chilling
We'll frolic and play, the socialist way,
No more seeing Christmas lights turned on

Not my senior moment

Visiting Wal-Mart Sunday, I saw a Christmas tree seeking gifts for seniors.
I saw a few tags. One was for a 50-year-old.
They can't be a senior. They are only a year older than me.

Stooges and political stooges

DaTech Guy features the trailer for the upcoming Three Stooges movie.
And follows with a post about giving to political stooges.
Why do people give to lousy candidates when they could get more bang for their blog supporting bloggers?
DaTech Guy is trying to keep the wolf from the door (and cannoli on the table) while writing about conservative issues he cares about. Things that can make our lives better now and into the future.
Meanwhile, the left is throwing money at the Occupy tents and occupiers who don't have a mortgage to worry about.
Anybody can give to establishment candidates. There's plenty of them at the receptions, hoping to find their way to big parties.
Just a few visionary moneymen could seed money for the conservative blogosphere, and be remembered for their contribution for years in the future. Instead of a fleeting handshake from a politician on the way out.
It's just under a month until the New Hampshire primary. Money can help spread your word through the internet, or just go from you through the politician to some TV station - without really leaving a trace.
Make your mark, and make it hard to erase.
Hit the tip jar, since Sheetz doesn't give breakfast away.

D'Antoni Day

Concord University honored one of its own Saturday - 97-year-old Lewis D'Antoni.
D'Antoni coached numerous years at West Virginia high schools, and two of his boys couldn't be there for the game - they are New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni and his brother Dan. Getting ready for a season in two weeks - and dad has good words for his sons' team.
They have done great. I knew that they were going to be good coaches, because they grew up with a basketball in their hands, in a house where basketball was always around.”
He said, “They wanted to coach together all their lives, so they finally got together, in New York City — which has been tough.
“The three years Mike has been there, they’ve traded off all their players. They’ve changed the roster. He didn’t have much chance of coaching them.
“This year, I think they’re going to a little more stable and going to have better ball players, and I think he’s going to do real well this year.”

Undefeated team watch

You could have grabbed a bunch of people out of the stands and done better than the Raiders did against Green Bay Sunday.
Next week, it's the Chiefs for the Packers. Sure looks like 14-0.
The Colts dropped to 0-13. Two home games against division foes and a trip to Jacksonsville remain in their quest to win one.
The 1972 Dolphins and 2008 Lions continue watching.

Speaking from the gang plank

Captain Obama speaks to 60 Minutes tonight.
From the gang plank.
No matter how sweet your words are, we still want you pushed overboard.

It's not just getting gifts

Christmas isn't just a season of getting presents.
It's also giving.
My church found this cool commercial to illustrate the idea.

Another Saturday night

How come there's political debates on Saturday night?
Do they figure interested citizens have nothing better to do than count flowers on the wall?

Or do they just need something to talk about on the Sunday morning shows?
Joy at the Conservative Commune takes a whack at the process.

Tis the season

I posted this video two years ago, and someone found it on Google this week. So time for a repost.

Now I'm hungry

Another sign of the cultural divide for 2012 - Whole Foods vs. Cracker Barrel.
When you can buy a full meal and drink for less than a quart of organic pomegranate juice, I know which side will be better able to handle budget cutting in the future.

Smart take on Obama

Frank J. Fleming thinks it will be a while to hear President Obama's next good idea.
Still, we’re assured of how smart Obama is and that he’ll tell us his next genius idea as soon as he gets his tongue unstuck from the flagpole.

Saturday song

Sure it's cold outside. But I can still post a summer song, right?

Facebook quote of the week

While I am thrilled a student in my class is being honored this evening for her Fire Safety poster award, I am less than thrilled to be going back out in this yuckola weather!

How to insult Bill Bolling

Can Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling cast the tiebreaking vote in the Virginia Senate?
Joe Biden can break ties in the U.S. Senate.
Comparing Bolling to Biden.
That's mean.

Running out of channels

Grandpa John had a sample Democratic ballot for 2012 - all the presidents Obama is pretending to be.
Paco goes down the list of Democratic presidents for Obama to channel.

"Whatever possessed you to pick Bo up by his ears in front of all those reporters?”
“Damn! I guess I’m channeling the wrong president again. I thought it
might be Lyndon Johnso, but I guess not.”
Axelrod sobbed. “Not that business again! Last week you channeled Andrew Jackson and challenged John Boehner to a duel. The week before that you channeled James K. Polk and sent a gunboat to bombard Vera Cruz. The week before that you channeled Andrew Johnson and showed up drunk at a press conference. You’ve got to stop!”

Blasting Obama

Rich Lowry takes sharp aim at President Obama's Kansas speech.
Everyone agrees the ticket ahead in America is education. Children from the bottom fifth who get a college degree have only a 16 percent chance of staying in the bottom fifth and a 19 percent chance of making it to the top fifth and getting excoriated by the most powerful man in the world.
Education may help, but it sure hasn't seemed to help Obama.

More Christmas spirit

Kellie Pickler sang about red high heels in her first song.
How about a red Christmas dress picture?

Weekend watchdog

How do you know the college football regular season is over? Army and Navy play.
The annual battle moves to FedEx Stadium this year, on CBS Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
It hasn't been a great gridiron year for either team - no bowl trips like in 2010. But over 100 years of history permeates the matchup, which will make its first trip to the Nation's Capital.
The end of the regular season means awards season starts. ESPN has most of the awards Thursday at 9 p.m., and the Heisman Trophy presentation Saturday at 8 p.m.
The old I-AA continues its march to a national championship with the quarterfinals this weekend.Northern Iowa takes on Montana Friday at 8 p.m. on ESPN, and Saturday at noon Montana State battles Sam Houston State on ESPN.
Another AFC team visits Washington this week - Tom Brady and the Patriots take on the Redskins on CBS at 1 p.m. CBS has the doubleheader, with Oakland's visit to 12-0 Green Bay highlighting the late schedule. FOX in Washington offers the Bears' trip to Denver at 4 p.m.
The Cowboys and Giants battle for the top of the NFC East Sunday on NBC, while ESPN has the Rams heading to Seattle Monday night.

Time to give big

Christmas is the season of giving.
In Augusta County, several churches and ministries are having a Big Give at Expoland Saturday morning.
Lots of volunteers helping lots of people.

Vote for killer

President Obama, or President Rambo as he likes to be called.
Tim Kaine took up the flag Wednesday.
Allen asked Kaine why he spent the final year of his gubernatorial term serving as DNC chairman — “the most political, partisan job in America,” as Allen put it — rather than focusing on the needs of Virginia. Kaine’s answer: “To serve the president, the president who is our commander in chief, the president who helped capture [Osama] bin Laden and wipe out al-Qaida leadership.”
Vote for killer Obama. The best killer we've ever had.
If only he'd talked about that in 2008.

How can you walk with that chip on your shoulder?

My college newspaper tells the story of a poor employee, planning to sue after her termination.
She likes wearing a baseball hat and keeping her hair short.
So some people have called her "sir."
What incident really got her in trouble? When she was representing the university at the county courthouse.
Entering the courthouse as a Towson University parking official with a University identification badge, Petrides said she was able to routinely bypass the metal detector at the building’s entrance to the room where the citation was being judged. On Nov. 17, she entered in the same fashion, but the bailiffs at the entrance called after her.
“They started yelling at my back, ‘Sir, sir, sir.’ And I wasn’t turning around because I’m not a sir,” Petrides said.
But Petrides said she went back to the entrance, where the bailiffs questioned if she had the proper credentials to pass the metal detector.
“Before I walked away, I said, ‘I would appreciate it if the next time I come in, you address me by the correct pronoun,’” Petrides said. “At that point, I walked away, and I could hear them saying things behind my back. And I know they were trying to get me to turn around to start something.”
Were they trying to start something, or do their job securing the facility? And watching a person walk past and ignore their calls?
It's a nice lengthy story, but should be an easy decision.
You can wear what you like. But you have to deal with what happens.
Most people will see a look and make a decision. Sorry if it's the wrong one.
Nothing against you, because people don't think about you. You're not the center of our lives.

Who ya gonna blame?

Blago's sentencing Wednesday brings an end to one of the great sagas of the 2008 post-election period.
It inspired my first political song parody.
And began tarnishing the Obama image before he took office.

Lots of rain

It's raining hard in Fishersville.
I took the dog out to take care of her business.
She looked at me like "Are you kidding me?"

Harry Morgan, RIP

Harry Morgan, well-known as Colonel Potter on MASH, died Wednesday. Remembering him with a song.

Working with Obama

Robert Gibbs was on the Today Show Wednesday, saying how Republicans in Congress need to work with the president.
Nancy Pelosi and Democrats worked with him for two years.
Look where it got them.

Looking ahead to 2012

DaTech Guy boils the 2012 election down to a paragraph.
What a handicap the left is operating under! They have to manufacture and peddle a storyline and hope the voters buy it. All we have to do is remind people of what they’ve already lived and we’re supposed to be afraid of these guys?

Famous speeches by ex-presidents

Blue Virginia seems awfully excited by Barack Obama giving a speech where Teddy Roosevelt talked in 1910.
Roosevelt was the former president in 1910.
Obama will be a former president in 14 months.
Didn't Roosevelt give any speeches when he was in power that Obama likes?

Today's Tied with Me

Technorati has this blog tied with Simplemom.net, which offers tips on saving on Christmas wrapping.
How many rolls of half-used Christmas wrap do you have?

Newt's challenge

Can Newt Gingrich be an outsider after years inside the D.C. establishment?
He's the insider that insiders hate, making him an outsider among the insiders.
If Nancy Pelosi knows the skeletons buried in his closet, then he knows the skeletons in all the closets throughout Washington.
Becoming popular for being unpopular.
Using insider hate to become the outsider candidate.
Gingrich has past successes and past failures. How he manages the balancing act determines whether he can move forward.
And a Virginia resident, Gingrich now gets the hometown edge.

Strikes and spares

Let the fun of the 2013 campaign begin.
SWACgirl posted some pictures from Bill Bolling's event Friday night, and immediately Not Larry Sabato was analyzing the photos for their implications in the Republican race.
The Democrats hope they have a chance in 2013. They might not even get noticed.

Two years ago

We've avoided the Dec. 5th snow that happened two years ago - and several others in recent memory.
The snow word appeared on TV this evening - maybe Wednesday night into Thursday.
I'm rooting for some global warming.

Dreams die hard

The Other McCain looks back at the dreamers who rode the Cain Train.

Cuccinelli - who leaked?

The biggest news of the weekend is Ken Cuccinelli's announcement that he'll run for governor in 2013.
Why announce now?
Right before the Republican Advance, when top Republicans gather to go Bowling with Bolling?
With this timing, who leaked the news?
A friend?
A Cuccinelli foe, forcing his hand?
The timing doesn't seem to help Cuccinelli - not even halfway through his term.
With a gathering of Bolling supporters from across the state looming.
It's going to be an interesting battle, but Cuccinelli seems to have started on the wrong foot.

Undefeated team watch

The Giants made it tough, but the Packers pulled out the win and remain unbeaten.
Up next, the fading Raiders.
The Raiders lost to the 2011 Miami Dolphins Sunday. The 1972 Dolphins continue to keep watch.

Occupy the homeless

Why has the #Occupy movement lost its sizzle?
I checked out Charlottesville's Hook, which profiled eight members of Occupy Charlottesville for the latest edition.
Two people are under 30, the idealistic people the movement would like you to think sparked it all.
There's one guy, age 58, who's been protesting for years.
The others - middle-age homeless people, joining the action.
If #Occupy is mostly young people, then it's got sizzle.
If it's more homeless people, that's a problem we've been dealing with for years.
Nothing exciting for news value, just a repackaging of an old problem.
Occupy Charlottesville has been getting some coverage, thanks to being right near the TV station. We'll see what happens when Lee Park can't be the base.

Three years ago

Instapundit has began featuring posts of his from 2001.
This blog doesn't go back that far.
But what did I say in 2008?
What if Obama is actually New Coke? Sounds good in focus groups, but disliked when unveiled?
That looks pretty good three years later.

Just short

Fishersville's Wilson Memorial fell one game short of the state championship contest, falling to Goochland Saturday.
Maybe next year or two. Wilson should stay in Group A through 2015 while Goochland should go back to Group AA.

Cain train's down the drain, oh such a pain

The Other McCain has his updates on Cain's campaign.
And expect updates from his sources.

Saturday song

This afternoon, all eyes will be on the Tigers - can LSU reach the national championship game?
How about some 80s music "Eye of the Tiger."

UPDATE: I didn't know this was one of the 50 worst videos of all-time.

It's plain staff are the bane of Cain campaign

The Other McCain finds the bane of the Cain campaign - staff wars.
I’m a little pissed” – that one source severely understates the wrath of many people who love Herman Cain, but hate his campaign.
Inevitably, however, the helpless confusion of the campaign reflects on the candidate: He’s the guy whose business expertise is about finding the right people to focus on the right problem. But the people he has found — well, they are the problem.

The force is strong with this one

I wish my governor was a Jedi.
Trog is so lucky.

How many stopped looking?

Rush leads his show with the unemployment numbers
  • 122,000 new jobs
  • 315,000 people quit looking for work.
If all the unemployed quit looking for work, think of how much Blue Virginia would be celebrating.

Major accomplishment

Wilson Memorial tries to advance to the state football final Saturday at Goochland.
Good coverage of the Hornets at NBC29 and the News Leader.

Weekend watchdog

Saturday, the 12-member Big Ten will host its first conference championship game.
And teams in the 10-member Big 12 will be finishing their regular seasons - too small for a title game this year. That's how we end the regular season.
In the Big Ten, Michigan State meets Wisconsin in Indianapolis for the BCS berth Saturday on FOX. The Pac-12 also holds its first conference title game, matching Oregon and UCLA Friday at 8 p.m. on FOX.

Other conference championship games include the MAC(Ohio vs. Northern Illinois) Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 and the Conference USA matchup between Southern Mississippi and Houston Saturday at noon on ABC.

Versus shows TCU vs. UNLV at 2:30 p.m., with BYU ends the season at Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
It's the weekend of the Colts matchup with New England, annually one of the best TV draws of the season. Not so in 2011. NBC pulled it from the Sunday night lineup weeks ago, putting Detroit at New Orleans there instead. ESPN has the Chargers playing in Jacksonville Monday night.
Sunday, the Redskins are on CBS in Washington as the Jets come to town at 1 p.m. FOX in Washington can only show one game of the doubleheader, going with Packers at Giants at 4:15 p.m.
The Capitals try to give new coach Dale Hunter his first win Saturday at 7 p.m. when Ottawa visits Verizon Center on Comcast.

Tiger Woods gets to play with the big boys this weekend, at the Chevron World Championship Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. on NBC.

Almost Christmas

The country singers kicked off December with a special on ABC.
Jennifer Nettles got to shine as the host.

UPDATE: Part of Rule 5 Sunday, on Sunday.

30 more days of this

It's just the start of December, and I'm already sick of the Obama emails to have dinner with him and Michelle.
Isn't it early to hit on this gimmick?
Just donate $3 and have a chance to eat with both Obamas?
What's next if fundraising doesn't pick up?
Dinner with Bo too?
Give or Joe Biden will visit your house?
It's hard to be excited about "this special opportunity" when you see it day in and day out in your inbox.
