What are the political dynamics behind the "cap and trade" bill, and will they change over time? BlueVirginia highlights a Democratic pollster who thinks it will benefit Democrats. Looking at it, I disagree.
The bill is supposed to make "polluters" pay. They are the ones hurting you now.
When prices rise for products across the board, will the anger go at those raising prices, or the government for making the price rise inevitable? The government, led by Democrats, will be hurting you then.
Companies don't have an accounting line item for pollution. It's not part of their profits that can be taken by the government without consequence.
Republicans are trying to slow down the bill before the economy suffers damage. But saying "They will hurt you in the future" doesn't catch the attention of "They are hurting you now." It doesn't mean the warnings won't happen.
And when the law changes, the purveyor of hurt changes.
Sure, people want to save polar bears. But they don't want to dress like polar bears in their own houses.
They'll bundle up, head to the voting booth, and vote out those whose desire for change hurt them.
