The Democrats are using the "birthers" as a gotcha for Republican leaders - either alienate those who believe or make the mainstream wonder "why you so crazy?"
Here's some talking points I hope might help leaders slide through the trap.
"We are living in stressful and challenging times. Things we thought were secure are looking fragile. From the attacks of 9/11 to the stock market fall last September, things seem to be spinning out of control.
"In times like these, one could lose faith in the structure that have guided our country for over 200 years. Like the faith that a birth certificate issued by the state is a legitimate, untampered document.
"President Obama says he was born on August 4, 1961 in Hawai'i. He was there so he should know.
"Could he have been born somewhere else? Could be. Could I be named People's Sexiest Person Alive this year? Could be. Not very likely, but possible.
"We have lots of tasks ahead - dealing with the economy and the world we live in. We need people to use their passion in debating these issues. If you're passionate against what President Obama would like to do, then use your passion that way. If you're passionate for his plans, use your passion that way.
"If you're not passionate either way, that's OK too. America is built on choices, freely made."

As far as the Democrats go, it would be better if we let the birth distraction go.
However, it's fun to see the D's on the receiving end of a bunch of 'POTUS is illegitimate' nonsense, as a rebuttal to the sour grapes coming out of Florida in 2000.
