Trump sees what elites ignore

David Brooks accepts his blame for the rise of Donald Trump.
I was surprised by Trump’s success because I’ve slipped into a bad pattern, spending large chunks of my life in the bourgeois strata — in professional circles with people with similar status and demographics to my own. It takes an act of will to rip yourself out of that and go where you feel least comfortable. But this column is going to try to do that over the next months and years. We all have some responsibility to do one activity that leaps across the chasms of segmentation that afflict this country.
He credits Trump for bringing this into focus. But doubts he's the right response.
But shouldn't the person who captured the moment get a chance to try his ideas?
If the old ideas have failed, maybe those who pushed those ideas need to learn from Trump.

My hometown

The lead story on the national story Thursday was the young boy who entered the Baltimore TV station claiming to have a bomb.
He was shot after not obeying police orders.
Now they tell were he's from - Elkridge, Maryland.
My hometown.
Fortunately, it's been 39 years since we've lived in the town.
He lived in a development built since then.
But still too close.

How fast did the economy grow in the recent quarter?
0.5 percent.
Woo-wee.
Feel the excitement of the Obama economy.
And people wonder why Donald Trump took off as a candidate.

Big ideas

The Weekly Standard prints an analysis of how Donald Trump got the better of Ted Cruz.
Because Trump saw the bigger picture.
Cruz's operation was oriented around microtargeting various types of voters using big data. This involved reaching individual voters with unique messages designed to appeal to their researched opinions. It was executed using everything from Facebook ads to canvassing via phone banking and door knocking through a large network of volunteers.
Trump's operation essentially consisted of the candidate doing news interviews, flying around to speak at rallies, and issuing direct public statements on channels like Twitter. Only shortly before the actual voting did he deploy paid advertising and use volunteers. Unlike Cruz, he appears to have done no polling or other type of opinion research. Rather than microtargeting, Trump aimed for mass appeal among the GOP electorate.

Knight moves

Donald Trump needs to appear kinder and nicer.
So he'll appear with Bobby Knight in Indiana.
Job done.

Join the party

Roger L. Simon is ready to call the contest - for Trump.
I agree with Tucker Carlson, who said on The Kelly File Monday night that Trump was the only candidate with a chance of defeating Hillary Clinton in the general election. It is only Trump, of all the Republicans, if indeed he is a Republican, who is enough of a wild card to overcome the new American demographics that so favor Democratic candidates in presidential elections. They were bad enough when Obama ran against Romney. They are worse now.
#NeverHillary, people.

How Cruz can win Maryland

Tuesday is primary day in Maryland.
How can Ted Cruz peel away some of Donald Trump's support?
Remind Ravens fans that Trump is friends with Tom Brady.
That ought to sink his support.

Funny money

Shopping today, one of my dollar bills came back with a stamp for Bernie Sanders.

I haven't seen any stamps for Trump yet.
But I haven't seen many $50s or $100s either.

Believe it or not

The Washington Capitals won a playoff series.
A rare event, even for a team that has made the postseason most years since 1982.
Too bad they have to face the Pittsburgh Penguins next.
One series win in franchise history.
Keep the golf clubs close.

Here's the pitch

Steven Crowder has the thoughts of Curt Schilling.

Moe good food

Two years ago, the owner of the Waynesboro movie theater announced plans for his own restaurant next to the theater.
He had tried to attract a franchise, but couldn't.
His own restraurant didn't do well, open just over a year before closing in November.
Now the site has a Moe's Southwest Grill.
It was packed Friday evening, the second night of operation.
Hopefully this dinner and a movie combo will work.

Here to save the day

Another Trump supporter tells the reason why.
He's thinking about how to save the country.
Ask yourself this: why did Donald Trump run for president in the first place? I believe that the real reason is that he, like you, is deeply concerned about the current state of the United States of America, and he, like you, fears for its future.

Come with me if you want to live

Would you like to be a zombie on The Walking Dead?
Gotta be thin.
One thing you don't think about? Now that all of the walkers are looking more emaciated and decayed, the casting call says that all applicants "must be slim." Who knew?!
Unfair to fat zombies.

A line of Comrades

Don Surber likes that Bernie Sanders doesn't like the "Comrade Bernie" t-shirt.
A company called Liberty Fanatics is mocking Comrade Bernie Sanders with Red and White T-shirts.
Bernie is angry.
How dare the proletariat mock a member of the Politburo!

Proud of where they came from

A former co-worker of mine shares her thoughts on growing up in Appalachia.
In addition to these little things we also strive to live by the values instilled in us, and pass them on to others in younger generations. Values such as honesty and integrity.
Another favorite phrase I heard often when growing up: “They’re good people.”
That didn’t mean rich people, or people judged important by society’s standards. Nope, they could be poor as dirt without two nickels to rub together. That saying referred to a person or a family’s character — the type of people who would help neighbors after a tragedy, or mow the church lawn just because it needed to be done.
The good people that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton want to put out of work.

Food for thought

Megan McArdle looks at the competition between locally sourced food and how much the customer will pay.
And Americans expect cheap. Cheap, after all, is what makes it possible for us to spend so much money at restaurants; if we had to pay all the workers $20 an hour and ensure that all our meat and produce had been farmed in the latest and most approved 19th-century methods, few of us could afford to have weekly dining out in our budget. Restaurants might be more authentic, delicious, moral places. They would also be much emptier ones.

Grumpy old Democrats

John Podhoretz needed a break after watching the Democrats debate Thursday.
Bernie Sanders has won eight of the last nine Democratic contests, which gives him momentum and makes Hillary Clinton look bad. On the other hand, she’s all but got the nomination in the bag, and in the overall aggregate Democratic vote nationwide, she’s ahead of him 56 percent to 41 percent. New York polls have her ahead by about 10 points.
Still, she probably won because she’s ahead and didn’t make any big mistakes, and he said nothing that would expand his audience outward from the wildly enthusiastic leftists and kids who have kept his campaign chugging along.

Ain't the Kool-Aid cold?

On Facebook, I'm part of a group of Orioles fans.

Several others also had high hopes for the coming season.

Here to fix seven holes in your walls

Powerline wonders how SNL's skits on Hillary Clinton will impact her struggling campaign.

Undependable, that's what you are

Powerline lists the latest woes for California's energy situation.
A shortage of natural gas to run backup plants.
The need for natural gas backup capacity when you can't depend on consistent solar or wind power.
P.S. The necessity of conventional backup power for “renewables” is why the various mandates for expansion of renewable energy won’t translate into commensurate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It will be an amusing day when the data comes in showing that renewables have failed to reduce emissions, and everyone will be scratching their heads why. Green Weenies all around.

Live like you're in debt

Instapundit features another way the Republican establishment can lose support - giving money to green energy supporters and their friends.
In December, Congress purposefully allowed a series of tax credits for so-called “green” energies to expire. This was not some mere oversight as some have alleged, but a purposeful recognition that as the energy landscape has changed, the need to extend some two dozen of these credits was unwarranted. Others were allowed to continue — but roughly $1.5 billion were not.
But now, four months later, claiming that the expiration of these tax credits was a mistake, members of Congress on both the left and the right have tacked them back into a must-pass FAA reauthorization bill. What do green energy tax credits have to do with the Federal Aviation Administration, you might ask? Absolutely nothing — except the crony capitalists in green energy need their credits, and the FAA’s reauthorization is the nearest piece of essential legislation that these folk can sink their hooks into.
Do the people pushing this realize we are $19 trillion in debt?
When you have huge, crushing debt looming over you, you need to be careful with your money.
You don't waste funds when they are limited.
Except our leaders will.

Hey, beer man

If you've been on the first base side of Baltimore's Camden Yards, you've seen Clancy the beer man.
The NPR story on his career features photos from old Memorial Stadium, where he worked the same side of the field starting in 1974.
"I used to move quicker than a lot of the other vendors, because I was a sprinter in college," he says. "And another thing: You know I had the gift of gab. And I used to do rhymes so that helped me out."
One of his favorites?
"Hey! Empty your pockets, put your money in your hand, cuz here's Clancy, your beer man!"

Unqualified disaster

The Democrats are debating on what makes you "unqualified."
Bernie Sanders attacks Hillary Clinton's positions.
Hillary fans fire back - look at the jobs she's held.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is, without a doubt, the most qualified candidate to ever run for President in the history of the United States.  In the past, we’ve had Senators, we’ve had Governors, we’ve had the odd Congressman, but we have never had someone who’s served as a Senator and as a top ranking Cabinet Secretary, who also has the first hand experience of having been the first lady of a state and the first lady of the nation.
Sanders doesn't think she's unqualified for what's she's done - but what she's done there.
There's more to life than just being there.

Don Surber likes how Donald Trump's proposal to tax remits to Mexico makes his foes look bad.
But it is the shill reaction of the New York Times that delights me most. The newspaper reacted through a column by Will Olney, a professor of economics at Williams College. The column exposed some truths that the newspaper is reluctant to admit.
The first is that taxes have negative consequences on an economy.
The second is Trump's point that Mexico uses the United States as its welfare system.

Trump on attack makes liberals look bad.

Potty pity party

Powerline asks the questions everyone should about bathroom usage laws.
First, the supposedly intended beneficiaries were transgendered people, who are extremely rare. I have never met one; have you? It is bizarre to upset millenia of bathroom practice for the sake of a handful of people who are about as numerous as unicorns.
Second, no one proposed that transgenders who wanted to use the wrong bathroom had to have notes from their psychiatrists. In the absence of any means of verification, it seems certain that perverts, rapists and child molesters will camp out in women’s rest rooms roughly 15,000 times as often as transgenders. This represents a public safety hazard.
Maybe time to bring back the original uni-sex bathroom facility.

The world is interconnected.
All money is connected to fossil fuels.

On the other hand, that same patriarchal culture has taught people to regard a woman who does display the required toughness as “harsh.”
Nope. She's just annoying.
